York County PA School Taxes
I read an argument recently for changing the way we get money for school taxes.  It really made me think that this is a good way to go.

How it is now, here in PA, property owners pay the school taxes.  So, how many kids that go to these schools live in a house with the home owner?  I am having a little trouble actually finding that number but I do know as of the 2000 census, there were 148,219 households out of which 32.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them.  32.5% of 148,219 is 48,171 households with at least one child living with them.

The argument was to raise the sales tax and get rid of the property tax which makes a lot of sense.  A lot of kids that go to school live in apartments or rentals of some kind and their parents are not helping to pay for there public education.  The homeowners that do not have kids are paying for them.

What are your thoughts on the subject?  How would you like to see it?

Mostly I agree that those without children shouldn't have to pay school taxes.  However, in thinking of what it means to be a community and the effects of educating the children of that community, it seems that we should all play a part in ensuring that the children of our community are educated properly.  Because what kind of people they turn out to be effects us all.  I believe that part of the problems of our society are caused by the lack of communities taking the roles they used to in the lives of children.  Everyone played a part in educating the kids.  Everyone cared what kind of adults these kids turned out to be.  They will be the ones controlling our government, our next door neighbors, our care takers, when we are old. Think of public libraries, would we want people to be able to say, well I don't use the library so I want to make sure I'm not taxed for library funding?  Imagine the impact on the people who do use the libraries (mostly kids).  Not everyone has Internet yet.   But most definitely there needs to be a edu tax imposed on those who have kids and rent.  That's just plain not fair at all. And perhaps a very small fee for those without children. I'm not sure how the PA test scores compare to the National Average, but last I heard they weren't so good.  Less educated often leads often to higher crime rates.
